Another lost week in New York City --- Chapter One...

Last week I had the best time in New York City with some of my wonderful talented friends.  I am blessed to have met so many young people who don't seem to mind hanging out with the Countess :)

Joe Jung:   I met Joe one night a couple of years ago when he emceed the Berkshire Theatre Festival DuPont benefit.  We really cut a rug on the dance floor that night and, like most everyone I know these days, became internet friends...first on MySpace and then on Facebook.   Joe is the Director of Project:Theater which is doing lots of cool things in NYC and he usually plays guitar and sings his songs on Sunday nights at the Failte Irish Whiskey Bar on 2nd Ave.

I took the train into the city on Sunday afternoon and that night I headed over to the Failte to see Joe.  There was a football game on the TV in the bar which delayed Joe's act a bit but it gave us a chance to have a drink and catch up on news and gossip before he got up to sing.  Joe recently won The Ultimate Singer Songwriter contest at the Waltz Astoria and will be appearing in their show tomorrow night.

I wish I was back in the city to go to that show!

Daiva Deupree:  The Countess and Daiva met in a karaoke bar and bonded in a fierce way.  She was appearing in a play at BTF 2 summers ago and when her run was over we made plans to meet up in NYC in the fall.  Lots of times these kinds of plans never happen but we did stay in touch and we've been friends ever since.  There are very few times that I am in the city that I don't see Daiva.  She is one of the stars in a new indie movie, "The Bits in Between".

On Monday night we went to the Red Bull Theater reading of Camus' "Caligula".  These readings are just so entertaining and this one had Michael Urie in the role of Caligula....who was magnificent!  After the reading we headed down the street to the Ritz Bar where we proceeded to get a little tipsy while we talked and talked and talked.  I love you, Daiva <3

John Douglas Thompson:   Obie winner, actor, gentleman.....John and I met one night at a Shakespeare & Co. gala.  He was appearing as Othello that summer and I think I saw the play 5 times.  Every time someone came to visit, we went to see John perform.  He ended up winning the Obie last year for that role.  Now he was appearing in "Emperor Jones" and the run was almost over.  I had tried to see it last fall but it was sold out.  Luckily I scored a ticket and got to see it on Tuesday night.  I wouldn't be surprised if he doesn't win another Obie for this role.

John, the Countess, and LeRoy McClain

Then the night that I had really come into town for....Wednesday night means "Our Hit Parade" at Joe's Pub.  I think that needs it's own post.....tomorrow.....
