Remembering Mai-Ling

When I was 42 I met my future second husband, Bob.  He was 52.  We were both divorced for about 10 years, had great jobs, money in the bank, our children were pretty much grown, and we were free to have fun together.  When we knew it was serious between us we decided to buy a house together.  The one thing Bob said that he wanted when we got a house was to have a dog.  Apparently he had never been able to have a dog as a pet when he was growing up nor with his first wife.  I was not thrilled.  We were finally free to travel and just have fun.  Why tie ourselves down with a pet?

The day the bank called to say our mortgage loan was approved, Bob called me at work and said we should go out and celebrate but first he had an errand at the mall.  Could I meet him there?  We met and he led me over to the pet store and showed me the cutest little fluffy white dog.  I couldn’t believe it!  But there she was.  She looked at me and I looked at her.  It was like an instant connect.  She was an old soul in puppy form just waiting for me to show up.

The weird thing about all this was that the night before I had a dream about a white fluffy little dog named Mai-Ling.  In the dream she was living with me and seemed to have always been there.

Of course we took Mai-Ling home from the pet store.  She lived with us for 14 years.  My husband died when she was 13 and she lived for another year after that.  She died in my arms. That was 14 years ago and it feels like yesterday. She is missed every day.
